“Everybody Hurts…sometimes” – REM
Truer words were never spoken…
In reflecting on my years of practice in employment law, I see a disturbing but understandable stigma play out time and time again. People often feel a shame when their employment ends even though they lost their job due to no fault of their own. Many of my clients seek advice after being dismissed after years of excellent and diligent service, and due to the economic hardships facing their industries. Many of these clients have never been dismissed and have never had the need to process such a blow to their self-identity and worth.
If there is one thing I could emphasize to my clients, it is that you are not alone. A huge proportion of people are dismissed at some point in their career, and it is not your fault.
I hope that over time, society will come to accept that there is an ebb and flow in the workforce. This ebb and flow involves factors well beyond our control; economic, personality differences and political factors to name a few.
In the course of our work, we guide and support people through the dismissal process. Part of that support involves being alive to the human impact and upheaval that are caused by a dismissal.
You are not alone!
