New COVID leave…with a nice twist for employers!

On May 11, 2021, the BC government announced amendments to the Employment Standards Act to provide workers up to three (3) days of paid sick leave to remain at home if awaiting a COVID-19 test result, to self-isolate or self-monitor, as required by a public health order or if required by the employer because of a risk of exposure. Doctor’s notes are not required for the leave.

Employees will be entitled to their full wages for the leave, and employers that do not have a paid sick leave benefits plan can apply for reimbursement of up to $200 per day. The reimbursement program will be administered by WorkSafeBC, though it isn’t considered part of the workers’ compensation system and will not impact an employer’s WorkSafeBC premiums or the accident fund.
